I went camping this weekend at a washed out South Ga WMA hoping to get Nolan his 1st turkey.
Friday pm we have to use the boat to cross the water behind a locked gate. While wading thru we look into a foodplot and there's 6 jakes and 4 hogs feeding. I set him up on a log in the water and I back off. The turkeys can come to within 20 yds of him if they choose. I throw everything at them and they won't even look. I tell him to slip up out the water and belly crawl into range. He gets about 60 yds from the birds and I yell Shoot one. It's real windy and from my vantage I think he's 40 yds. He hits a bird but we never find it.
So Saturday a.m. I setup in the other plot and 3 jakes come out but I do not call because they didnt respond or show interest the day before. They feed out of the plot and back into the woods about 50 yds away. There are several other guys in here with us today and I told them to whistle as they approached on the road behind us. We were all in for the boat ride back. As soon as they whistle the 3 jakes step back in the plot. I yelp to let the guys know to stay back and tell Nolan to shoot.
Boom and he drops 1 at 48 yds! His 1st bird and I am very happy that a few friends were right there to share the moment.
