    Default Sabrinas hunt.....

This is her report..... I'm posting it for her.

Okay, this morning dad had to wake me up at 3:30am to start getting ready so we could get to a spot he wanted. So we left the house at about 4:00 and got to our spot. We sat in the truck sleeping till 6:30 when it just starting getting light. We eased our way back to our spot...well kinda close to it because it was all flooded out.

So we stood on this old road and listened for one....and listened...and listened....nothing! We walked a little bit back towards the flooded out area...we walked on the dry land and stopped and listened..and listened....and GOOOOOBBBLLLE!!!! I looked at dad and he looked at me then...GOOOOOOBBBBBLLLLLE!!!! Dad looked at me and he said we got to go!! We started heading towards this bird we had to go through qite a bit of water. We stopped and listened at about 200 hundreds yds to make sure we werent going to bump him. Nothing....we took about 15-20 steps and he hit again! Dad said I know where he is and he said we still got lil bit ways to go. We went another 150yds and stopped and put our masks on because dad knew we were close. We got to the pine flat he knew they would be on. He said " before I call, we need to get to that pine tree 10 steps away so we will be able see." We took 5 steps and a big ole' tom flew out of the tree...then two more that were pitched on the ground flew(couldn't identify them) then we saw a hen take off from out of the tree

So after that, dad said lets work our way back to were we started and see if there is another bird in the block. We started to ease our way back, we got to an area close to were we started and dad pulled out his box call and hit it 3 four times real quick. And as soon as he did that we heard two clucks real close to us. Dad said drop to a knee and get your gun up! I did as he said got my mask up and while that was happening we saw the birds 20 steps from us!!! My glasses fogged up which stinked. Dad said he thought he saw red head but he wasn't sure. Then he tells me he sees two more bodys of turkeys. And they were 20 steps from us and I could not see because my glasses were fogged up!! Dad said he could of shot them they were so close!! He told me they were turning and feeding. He told me to clean my glasses...so I did. When the turkeys left, we got up and dad said we are going to circle back some and work our way around and see if we can't cut them off.

So we moved about 200 yds and got in front of the birds and found a big tree to sit on and got set up in a big burn area were we could see far. We sat for about 45 min - 1 hr calling about every 15min or so..and dad looked to his left and said " Sabrina don't move!! Don't move!!" So I SLOWLY moved my head to look over my left shoulder and there it was! Dad was identifying it as a hen and i told him no its not. He has a big ole' white head on him! Then he said your right and identified the bird as a jake at about 50yds. The jake yelped. Dad called back. And the jake was comming straight to us on a string at a trot! You could see he had a 5 or 6 inch beard on him. I was pumped!! And all of a sudden he starting drifting to his right, which made him go behind us on our left, instead of in front of us. The jake was 6 steps behind us. You could here him putting and purring, also his feet hitting the leaves as he walked by. Then all of a sudden we hear "vvvvvvvvv...vvvvvvvvvvv......vvvvvvvvvv." NOOO!!! Dads cell vibrated!!! The jake heard it and started to sound the alarm. He went from a walk to a trot sounding the alarm. His head went behind the tree, I swung the gun around and he took off flying!!!

To say I was disapointed would be an under statement. This would have been my first turkey in two years, because I didn't get one last year. A jake would have been nice to get me started again. Thank you PLP for texting my dad!!!

Me and dad started to laugh when we thought about it, I MEAN what were the chances of the phone vibrating right when we have a bird 6 steps behind us and him hearing it go off!? We just had some bad luck today, but it was a AWSOME hunt this morning to say the least!!

    Sunday morning......

Heard one this morning WAAYYY off. Sabrina and I started moving towards him. We got what I figured was about 1/2 way and I tried to make him scream again to close in on his location. When I cutt another screamed at us inside 100 yds!!! we dropped down and started working the bird. Over 25 min he gobbeled 5 or 6 times, his hens got FIRED UP. I thought we were gonna pull them and he would follow. All I did was cluck and purr. His 3 or 4 girlfriends did not like it!! LOLO They fed off to our left never presenting a shot. We made a move to circle and get in front of the group to no avail.. It seems after this weekend they are starting to get a bit better, more folks have heard talking in the mornings but most are with the girls now it seems. It should get hot in a couple weeks when they start setting!!

    Great weekend with the kid!

Yea she was crossing well up past her knees in the dark. Funny thing is we were looking at a gator at a bridge right up from where we were crossing just a few min earlier, we also saw gator tracks crossing the tank trail today. You don't see that too often..they are on the move with all the water as well. We saw gators, deer and heard hogs fighting today as well as hens just not the redhead we were looking for..he was close though!!
