Well I went out this morning before work to some public ground in search of number 2 for the year. I killed a bird with a 6.5" inch beard last week and have been gettin whooped since. Well, after missing a bird last night at 25 yards I went to a new area this morning in search of redemption. I found it in a good 3 year old gobbling his head off about 7:05 this morning in the short break we had in the rain. I slipped down in there toward him and got setup a hundred yards or so from him in a hardwood opening. He gobbled about 20 times from the tree and was getting hotter. I gave him a couple sweet series of soft yelps..he never answered me or cut me off but I just had a feeling this bird was interested.
At 7:20 he had gone completely silent and I knew he was contemplating making his move..either coming or going. I gave him the silent treatment rather than call and be over aggressive. I had the gun up facing his position waiting when I saw movement a little to my left..it was this big boy with a hen behind him. They were about 80 yards crossing in front of me. I gave my last soft yelps and put my box call up. This got the hen's interest and she started feeding my way. After about ten minutes of strutting in circles and only one gobble on the ground at an owl he finally gave me a shot at 50 yards..he stuck is head up and I rolled him. The hen had already decided there was no need to stick around and was about to drag him away right when I got my chance. Pretty good 3 year old..9 7/8" beard, 1 1/8" spurs. He'd been doin alot of breeding..his chest was missing a bunch of feathers. Guess its good I missed yesterday..I probably wouldnt have went this a.m.
