Jacobs double..

Well I have worked a ton this year,and really have only about 9 days in the woods counting my road trip,so I finally got a chance to take my 8yr old son.Knowing that I am scheduled to work again last weekend,and that is the last weekend of the season I was pretty ancy about trying to get him on a bird.

So many people still in the woods on this Popular piece of public land,so I decided we would sleep in,and go hit a field I knew about.We arrived at the spot at 10:50am or so,and on our way in a guy whistled?What the heck?Where'd he come from?We spoke,and I told him I would back out.His truck was parked on a different road than mine,and I had no idea he was there,but told him I would pull out since he was there first.He said no big deal they were pulling out.

We decided to pull out anyways since they had been in there,and headed to a berry patch another 1/4 mile away,and got settled in around 11:40am.Dewberries are my #1 late season food source.They are a juicy treat for a hot mid day turkey.

1pm I see 2 birds.I wasn't sure if the first bird was a jake,so I told him not to shoot.Finally I got a good view and it was a jake.Told him to shoot the lead bird.It stopped at 30yds and he hammered it with his 20ga youth model shooting 3" mag #5's

I told him we need to sit back down and wait.I knew there was a longbeard in the area.

2pm a hen slips in behind us,and we watch her a few minutes before she busts us and is gone(don't move evidently means move your head,and gun..lol)

3:50pm I see 2 jakes coming in,and Jacob gets on them.He asks which is the bigger one,and I told him the one in the back.The birds get behind a bush,he loses track of them,and we get busted by bird #1.They fly off.He starts crying and is really upset.I have to calm him down.We don't get them all bo.I said there's a big un around..Let's keep at it.

4:15pm 2 hens come in and we get busted immediately.He's ready to leave.I talk to him a little more,and we stay..Just til 5:30pm ok?..

4:50pm I see big boy step out the pines into the berry patch.Got him turned on him,and turned the video camera on.He looks close enough...Whenever your ready jake..Boom!Bird down!

I run over there,and this thing has a good beard!11.5" to be exact,and a nice set of 1" spurs..We called it day!!What can a dad say?I never thought it would turn out that good!Public land has been awesome to me this year!!

Wound up he shot the bird a little far..44yds,but that 20ga 870 is a bad mamma jamma.
