    Default Knife sharpener

If you don't want to get out the stone and oil,I found this thing to do a great job with just a few strokes.Put a nice edge on my BK2 in a few seconds.I bought mine here in town at Ace hardware for $10.00.Sharpening blades can be reversed for tool to last twice as long.Great for a quick knife tune up. I've been told by my elders that such devices eat up the blades material and make the tool wear out faster.

    But I don't know if it's true.

Never thought about that. For such a cheap sharpener,it did seem to take off some metal.Might not want to use it on a Busse or some other pricey blade. It is great for a quick touch up on on a cheaper knife or machete.I believe it'll take some doing to wear out that Becker2.

I use sandpaper on a soft backing and finish up with chrome polish. Its easy and I'll put the edge it ptoduces against anybodys.

Doesnt really work for sciccors and the like though but those are really easy to sharpen with a stone.

Wet/dry sandpaper on a soft backing. I have a 2x4 mounted on my bench with a couple pieces of cardboard and som indoor/outdoor carpet stapled to it. I staple the wet/dry paper directly to it. THe idea is to have something with a little "give" to it to help convex the edge.

For grit it depends on what I'm sharpening. I will start out with a 220 or coarser grit if its the first time I've sharpened it and I need to do some reprofiling. Once I get the profile the way I want it I move up to 400/800/100/1500/2000. Once I get done I just flip a piece of sandpaper over and put a little paste chrome polish on the back and use that to strop. No need for a leather strop. When I'm done I get a mirror fininsh and a edget thats stronger and cuts better than a flat ground edge using stones. I have a cheap Buck 110 folder that can lift letters of a newspaper if I can hold steady enough.

For large blades or machettes I just discovered that sandpaper wrapped around a paint stir stick works very well. The stick has a little give to it for the convexing. You just use it like a regular file, but it gives a nice convex edge.

There is my Swamp Rat after the first sharpening.

Thanks for the detailed write up and I'll try your ideas.I do okay on most of my knives with a stone but have a USAF pilot knife that's a pain in the a.. to get sharp. The accu sharp put an edge on it quick but took off more metal than was needed.I'll be getting some wood, carpet and sand paper next week.Nice looking $$Rat$$ by the way and
