    Default Tips for AR-15 shooting

I have decided to shoot my "first" ever match on Oct 26 with my AR-15 in 5.45.

I use iron sights and a GI M60 sling for stabilization. Regular hand guards with no vertical grip for now.

The match will be at Marion Gun Club in Macon GA.

The shots will be on a 21"x21" target at 100 yards.

Positions will be prone slow fire, prone rapid fire, sitting rapid fire, and standing slow fire.

Any tips for me are very welcome. Any and ALL tips and hints and tricks. From stance to breathing to eye technique for sighting.

    Thanks.

There happens to be an Appleseed here in Hinesville next weekend. Is there any way you could attend. Everything you need to know will be covered there and its MUCH easier for me to show you than to try and write it here (or anywhere else).

BTW is the M60 sling like a standard two point? If so you would be much better off for this purpose with a Garand sling or even a 1917 leather sling. I prefer the Garand style. THey are still available through cheaper than dirt and DPMS.

YouTube - Improving Your Shooting #8. USGI Sling on Garand

Here is a good video on using the garand sling. THis sling was used all the way through the M16A1 days so dont think its only for the garand. He has a lot of good tips in these videos.

If you want more information on the Appleseed let me know. If you can't make it I'll do what I can to help you out.

I've aspired to attend an appleseed session or weekend. But Hinesville is a good three hours away, and I have a field training exercise next weekend at Fort Benning.

The M60 sling has the two buckles like the USGI sling. But it's nylon keeps it from being easily adjusted like in that video.

I do use the sling in different way I learned from some other shooters...not the best way, just uses the body for zero position support, but it'll suffice for my first match I suppose. I'm not trying to win, just trying to immerse myself in the sport and have some fun.

Also...I have some parts coming in and hopefully my rifle will have it's vertical stub and some glass for better sighting...that should help a little. and I'll be able to practice when I go home before the match. But I might still shoot irons. I've shot 30/40 at the pop up range. it's those 250m and 300m shots that messed me up.

Plus, with that I had a long barrel A2 and this is my own personal carbine this time...so I wonder how that will effect the range.

Oh well, we'll see soon....and when I get to my rifle I'll see if I can try that sling technique. Thanks.

It's $70 for the weekend. THe land owner charges $5 a day for the range use ($10 for the weekend) that you can pay when you get there. Women, .mil and people under 21 shoot free. The schedule/registration link is above.
