It's definitely small enough.
Single shot makes it a great trainer rifle/first rifle.
EDIT: It's also cheaper than most chipmunks I believe.

how young are the grandkids????? if they arent too little just get a used 10/22
and cut the stock down.....My dad found a used one for $75 the other day....
the bonus is when they get older you can dude it up and its a grownup gun that is as accurate as it gets......my 10/22 is a big hit at the family reunions with all the nieces & nephews.....kids+22+pond+turtles+brick of ammo =fun

Thanks Y'all for the responds I'm trying to buy it at $50.00 so it may just be what I want.....as for bigger 22's I got bout three of them around the house Two auto's and one Bolt..

Sounds like I'm in the same boat. Time for a lever action. Got a cut off 10/22 for my 9yr. old son he shoots it well just need better sites and to cut it off a lil more.
