    Default Goose Hunting Experience

Well, my nephew got me out again. This time was to share the experience of goose and duck hunting. Being excited about getting to go, I can't get to sleep, so was up since the morning before; however, was ready to go around 2:30 AM. Jason picked me up a little before 4 AM and we took the 1-1/2 hr ride down to his club. Was good to see other family members and also other guys, I know from there. After everyone dressed to get out in the woods, we headed to a corn field and set up all the goose blinds and decoys. First light was coming in just as it was all finished. Jason put a blanket inside one of them and helped me get into it. I wore several layers of clothing, but he gave me another blanket. My hands were freezing, so he gave me a couple of hand warmers to hold on to, which worked great. Once inside, Jay put dried corn stalks on top of the blind and all around it for more camouflage. The screen cover comes down over your face, which is pretty close, but not as bad as being in an MRI. You haven't lived until you get into one of these goose blinds on the very cold ground and freeze your a$$ off!

Very soon, we heard and saw a lone goose, which was a migrator. He circled and was coming down, and one of my bro-in-laws let him have it with his 20 gauge. Very soon afterward, we heard more geese and saw a flock circling around and as they were dropping, shots went off and 2 geese were down. A few more flocks came in, some just circled and kept going and others circled and came in. All in all, 6 geese were taken by the 4 hunters who were out there, then. Packed everything up and left that field about 9:30 or so.
By this time, all were getting hungry, so we went to have breakfast and then hung out at the club with other members for awhile.

Later in the day, around 1 PM, one of my bro-in-laws took me to another property where we walked thru a path along side of a creek hoping to see some ducks. One of the hunters had gone ahead and was going to try to push them towards us, but the flock that was on the water took off, so he managed to shoot 2 nice mallards, a male and a female. We were still walking at the time, and saw that flock fly overhead. They were too high to shoot at, but was nice to see, anyway. We continued walking around that creek, but never saw any more ducks. Was a nice walk, even though I can't walk that fast. Dennis was kind in telling me to take my time and not to worry. Also, the weather was nice for that part of the day.

Thanks to both of them for getting me there and back and for letting me share the day with all of the guys. Was great to see all.

I had fun being there with them. These were all Canadian geese. The 1st one was smaller and they told me that's what a migratory one looks like. I would guess it was about 6 lbs. The others were the usual larger ones, approx. about 10 lbs each. We have tons of these all over the state.

Am sorry, I don't have any pics. I'll ask my nephew to see if anyone got a pic before my youngest nephew breasted them out. I know their cousin was trying to get it on video, but I don't know if how that turned out, yet. Will find out. If there are any pics, I'll send it Jack and ask him to post it.

Have never had any either. On another board, I asked what they taste like. If I get answer, will let you know. Was wondering if there is light and dark meat like chicken, also.
