I had a friend come down to try and get his first hog.We didn't see any hogs until near noon.It had finally gotten hot enough to make them get up to get water and wallow.Nerves got the best of him on the first 4 hogs we saw,and he missed. He was very excited to have seen his first wild hogs, but disappointed in himself. We kept at it.
About 40 minutes later we jumped a dozen hogs in the swamp. They had seen us before we saw them.We let them scoot into the brush and then we circled downwind. We caught up with one about 200yds and after a short stand off he got a clean shot on her with my slug gun.It was a 60# black/yellow marble colored sow.Very nice coloration IMO.
We found a big oak, cooled off for a few minutes. Then I cleaned her on the tailgate.Things simmered down, and then the rain moved in for about an hour.I was hoping it would get the hogs up and moving, and it did.We saw a group of piglets feeding, and when we slipped within range I saw 2 bigger hogs.I noticed one was sagging with milk, and the other wasn't I told him to shoot that one,and he took the shot at 50yds freehanded with his 30-06.He was so excited and breathing so hard he missed again...This mild mannered fella gets wound up hard when he sees some pork!
I had one more spot we could go to,and when we were slipping through the pines we saw 6 good ones rooting around in a small clearing. We slipped in downwind of them, and got to within 60yds.We both had rifles this time.I told him to take the biggest one,and I wanted the tan one.I told him to do the count down, and when the guns when off both hogs were down. The other 4 hit the thicket before we could do anything.
His boar was about 165#.Very thick in the chest. He had alot of fight marks on him too.He had a 1 3/4" cutter, and the other was broken.Mine was around 145#,but he only had 1" cutters. We had a blast.
