    Default New Handgun Owner

I was given the gift of a Taurus .38 Sp 2" barrel 5-shot. Probably more info than anyone needed to know, but I'm sure I'll learn how to abbreviate that as I go along. Anyway, I have read that there is no law about registering a gun in Georgia. What's involved in getting a permit for concealed carry? My uncle bought this for me, and I want to make sure I'm doing everything properly. Any advice would be helpful and appreciated!
    Thanks...
    Jen

Jennifer, welcome to this site. Nice to have another gal on board. I also own handguns and love to go target shooting, whenever possible. I am in NJ, so am not familiar with any gun laws from GA, but am sure several on here can help you out. Good luck with that Taurus .38 snub nose.

Welcome to the forum Jennifer. Glad to have you.

Your uncle picked a good first gun for you. A revolver in .38sp is pretty easy to learn on and carry.

I just went down to the courthouse and ask about the CCW and they steered me in the right direction. Like lostoutlaw said.....you fill out the application then go to the Sherriff's office and get finger printed. I think I paid the Clerk of Court $25.00 the I had to get a money order for the GBI that was $24.00. If the background check comes back clean they will issue your CCW.

How long it takes to get the carry permit will depend on what county you live in. A buddy of mine applied in the county next to me and it took 5 days. I applied in the county I live in and it took almost 5 months! The actual process is simple though. Like the others said, just go to the courthouse. They will point you in the right direction.

Jennifer - Welcome to the shooting/concealed carry fraternity/sorority. As far as the permit is concerned, usually the Probate Court in your county will be the place to begin (anyone at the Sheriff's office should be able to tell you where to go). GeorgiaCarry.org is a good site as well.

It took me almost 3 months to get mine. Thats when they used the old finger print way. Now with the new computer system in our county it only took my wife a week to get hers.

It varies from county to county but here in Liberty county you bring a money order for $19.25 and $15 cash to hte probate court to do your paperwork, then go to the sheriffs for fingerprinting with the recipts you got from the probate court. Wait a week or two and the probate court will call you to pick it up (provided you aren't a sex offender or felon).
