I sent off an email to Mr. Harvey to see if he could shed light on this and here is his reply. Please discuss....

Jack,
There seems to be an above normal rate of confusion this season
concerning legal weapons that can be used to harvest hogs during small
game season. I have received an abundance of phone calls and emails
about this subject. Apparently you have gotten some conflicting
information, but this is what I will enforce:
Fort Stewart Regulation 420-4 provides that: C-2. Small Game Firearms,
a. "SHOTGUNS": Any having shot shell size no greater than 3.5 inches in
length with No. 2 shot or smaller or steel shot size F or smaller.
"RIFLES AND HANDGUNS": Any .22 caliber or smaller rim fire, air rifle or
any muzzle loading firearm (scopes legal).
Note that the reg states "rimfire" and not centerfire. No .22 cal
"centerfire" rifles are allowed.
Another point that seems to confuse hunters is the "extended hog season"
during which you can use centerfire rifles. The extended hog season
closed on 14 Aug and the "small game season" began on 15 Aug. While
hunting hogs during the small game season, you can only use those
weapons that are legal for use during small game season.
I hope I have answered your question. If not, feel free to reply.
