Got my first of the year
This is about my 10th outing this season. I have seen many does and a few small antlered bucks with my biggest to date being a confirmed 3 point. I have been waiting to get that big buck first.
Well this morning I was sitting at the end of a wind row with a slight incline 75 yards or so then flat for 100 yards or so and then a steep hill which was serving as my backstop. 7:15am cow horn spike steps out and crosses the wind row. A little later gun shots in the distance. With these gunshots I figured everybody was getting deer in our group. Then I thought of last year walking to the truck on my last hunt of the season empty handed waiting on that big buck, giving up many opportunities to shot smaller racked bucks and does. Then I was thinking about on how I was going to cook those last 4 packs of ground deer and realizing I was almost out. A few more shots off in the distance, oh crap I thought, I am loaded with hand loads and although I have confirmed them on paper many many times have never field tested them, what if that big buck steps out and the ammo does not perform.
What the heck I am taking the next doe and replenish my venison supply and will wait for the buck the rest of the season.
9:45 or there about two step out. The smaller one was between me and the larger one. There was about 3 inches difference in their heights and they were standing side by side. Being in the clearest shooting lane I decided to take the larger doe. Never stepping out from behind the smaller I had to take a spine shot. I settled on my shooting stick (a broken limb I picked up) and aligned my crosshairs and crack.
Still behind the scope I rode the recoil back down while chambering another round seeing the smaller one running away as me and my rifle settled down. The bigger one was on the ground lights out I thought but then she lifted her head by shear instinct I cracked off another round in the neck and it was instant lights out.
Both shots were true and where I intended to hit the deer. Broke her spin above where I typically shoot broadside shots (just behind the shoulder crease) and the second shot broke her neck right below the head. Having had the spine shot praised by many around me I selected it but with it not being instant lights out I may not take it next time.
Giving thanks:
Dear Lord,
Thank you for giving me this opportunity and guiding my hands true.
Amen
