They seem like a good idea as far as keeping the bolt and the inside of the upper clean. Wonder what the disadvantages are? I'm sure locating replacement parts might suck.

I heard when running suppressed the dont really help. Apperently it still blows gas back into the gun it just comes back the barrel instead of through the gas tube.
I say it adds more weight and parts, and I dont like adding either. Not to mention they are ore expensive.
If I wanted a gas piston 556 I would buy an Sig556. From what I hear they are the nicest AKs ever made.
I have read from many reliable sources that piston uppers may be a benefit to you if:
1. You have an SBR.
2. Fire lots of full auto.
3. You fire most if not all of that full auto suppressed.
4. Fire thousands of rounds a month.
I can't check any of those boxes so I'll pass on a piston.
