No I haven't tried one out, but I have read up on them.

Your options are either an Oly with their proprietary mags or a Cav Arms lower with a Hahn mag block, or an AR 45 lower. I'll go ahead and say I don't know much about the AR 45 other than it is a aluminum lower that uses grease gun mags and is still developmental or in very limited production.

The Cav lowers are all designed with a wide magwell to accomodate grease gun mags. all you would need is an Oly upper, a Hahn mag block, and some grease gun mags.

Last I heard, Oly uppers were very scarce, GG mags were expensive, and the resulting carbine is fun, but you will have a lot of money in it before it is all over with.

its a colt a1 upper with a rock river mid length upper on a cmmg lower and a dpms lpk. i converted the mid length to a yhm front gasblock so could run a knights m5 rail system. i used a asa dropin mag block . i got all this off of arfcom for a GREAT PRice. i have less than $400 in the complete upper and the mag block. i will shoot some pics thursday but i'm not sure how to post them. i can build a lot of things but i'm a puter dumass

Yes, much cheaper to build a 9mm and you are not as limited by lowers and mags.
