    Default AR Projects (PICS)

As a few of you may know I have been playing hell trying to get an AR built for the past several months (almost a year). Between lack of funds, vendors that can't deliver and my indecisive nature I haven't had a fully built AR yet (other than the wifes bushmaster which is also in pieces at the moment.) So I figured I would post what I've got so far and update as things get closer.

But first let me explain what I'm trying to accomplish

I am building two identical AR15s. One will be chambered for 556/223 the other 22LR. My goal is to have to rifles that feel and look exactly the same except one will cost 40cents a round to shoot and the other 6 cents. I figure that the first couple bricks of ammo will practicly pay for the rifle and give me a hell of a lot more trigger time and experience than I would get otherwise. Even reloaded ammo has gotten expensive so I figure the only way to ensure plenty of range time is with a 22LR AR.

At the same time I'm working on building a 10.5" 458 SOCOM SBR. I have everything I need for it except the barrel which SHOULD be here soon. It actually very late on deliver already, damn it. This will be my new hunting rifle. The game wardens will love me.

Here is the majority of it.

pictured are 2 Spikes bullet marked lowers (one SBRed, for the 458 SOCOM)
    One Essential Arms lower
One Spikes upper with enlarged ejection port (thanks to Jacks guns)
One Daniel Defense Lite rail 7.0 for the 458 SOCOM (Thanks to Joe )
One stag upper w/ Dennys Recon barrel and Young bolt carrier
    Two CMMG LPK
All lowers are sporting Magpul CTRs
One Magpul MIAD (waiting for AIM to get another in black)
    2 bolt carriers/bolts
Millet DMS-1 in a LaRue SPR-E mount (for the 458)
    Eotech 512 and 552
    Daniel Defence rail covers
    Troy BUIS (I need another)
KA VFG (for the 458 SOCOM)
    140 rounds of 458 SOCOM from Reed's
3000 rounds of Prvi 75grn Match ammo (500 more not in BP in the other room)
I have a stack of small parts coming from Del-ton as well. Mostly spare parts and a few pieces I really need.

The Dennys barrel is going to Spikes this week to have a clone built using a Shaw blank. Its going to be a custom job so that may take a little time. It should have the exact same barrel length and profile as my Dennys so the two rifles will feel and handle exactly the same. The only difference willl be the furnature color.

I thought about going with the ARES drop in gas psiton kit but decided against it and got a midlength barrel instead.
Now I need to stop by DD and pick up a couple of 9inch rails.

Heres my list of still needs, I'll update it as I get them:
    Spike 22LR upper
    2 DD rails
    2 front sights/gas blocks
    1 Troy BUIS
    1 Black MIAD
1 set of foliage green rail covers
2 3x magnifiers (clone for now)
    2 LaRue Flip mounts
2 VFGs (Spikes is workin on a new stubby at my suggestion :D)
two 5.11 Precision 2 point slings
    3 Weapons lights
    2 more BD 22lr mags

Thats all I can think of at the moment. If I am leaving something out please point it out.

Hopefully this will be done in the next 6 weeks. We'll see what happens.

    Cheers

Looks like it's going to be a fun thread to follow! I look forward to your build writeup. I built my AR last Fall and really enjoyed it. It's quite a shooter.

I like what you're doing there- with the .22 and 5.56. If you run across a good deal on a lower, let me know. I'm starting one as well.

You definantly have too much time and money on your hands, Cap. I mean ****! I'll take some of that Prvi off your hands though.

Funny I keep finding myself short on both time and money.

You notice those two midlength rails and flashlight mounts on my list. Think you can find a way to help a brother out with that?

This project definately needs some more DD

and ***update*** my barrel went out to Spikes today to start the cloning process. Now the waiting game begins, again, for it to come back.

Also borrowed the lower assembly tools from Jack so I can get the lowers put together next week.

One of the lowers is together now.

Most of the other one is done as well. I got hung up in two spots though. I lost all 3 of the detents I had even with the cool guy toll Jack made. And the MIAD is a PITA to install. I'm going to try to find a better grip screw than that POS they send with it and maybe then I will be able to get it on.
